Are the certificates nationally recognised?+
Yes. All certificates are issued by CBD College (RTO 91399), a nationally registered training organisation regulated by ASQA. Your statement of attainment is valid in all Australian states and territories.
What is the difference between HLTAID009 CPR and HLTAID011 First Aid?+
HLTAID009 (Provide CPR) is a 1.5-hour course covering cardiopulmonary resuscitation only — chest compressions, rescue breathing, and AED awareness. HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is a 3-hour course that includes HLTAID009 plus emergency life support (HLTAID010) and comprehensive first aid management across a wide range of scenarios including bleeding, fractures, anaphylaxis, and asthma. If your workplace or role requires a full first aid certificate, you need HLTAID011. If you only need to renew your annual CPR, HLTAID009 is sufficient.
Is HLTAID012 required for childcare and early childhood educators in the ACT?+
Yes. Under the Education and Care Services National Law and the National Quality Standard, all approved early childhood education and care services must ensure at least one educator holds a current approved first aid qualification that includes anaphylaxis and emergency asthma management. HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) satisfies this requirement. It covers all units within HLTAID011 plus paediatric-specific content including febrile convulsions, child-specific choking, and regulatory obligations for educators.
My employer says I need HLTAID003. Is that still valid?+
No — HLTAID003 has been superseded and is no longer offered. HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is the current national standard that replaced it. If your employer or a job posting specifies HLTAID003, an HLTAID011 certificate fully satisfies that requirement. All Australian workplaces now require HLTAID011 as the standard generalist first aid certificate.
Can I upgrade from CPR (HLTAID009) to First Aid (HLTAID011)?+
Upgrades from CPR to First Aid are only available on the same day as your CPR session. Call 1300 628 299 on the day to arrange it and pay the difference. Upgrades on a different day are not available for CPR to First Aid — you would need to book a full First Aid course.
Can I upgrade from First Aid (HLTAID011) to Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012)?+
Yes. You can upgrade on the same day by calling 1300 628 299 and paying the difference. You can also upgrade up to 6 weeks after completing your First Aid course — call us to arrange this. Upgrades more than 6 weeks after your original First Aid course are not permitted and a full Childcare First Aid enrolment would be required.
If I completed HLTAID011 and then upgrade to HLTAID012 in the same month, do I need to complete all the Childcare online learning?+
No. If you upgrade from First Aid to Childcare First Aid within the same calendar month, you only need to complete modules 15 and 16 of the Childcare online pre-learning — not the full module set.
Can I get my first aid certificate on the same day?+
Yes. Once you complete your in-person session at our Canberra venue, your Statement of Attainment is issued the same day. You must complete the online pre-learning module before attending, and you will need a USI (Unique Student Identifier) — both can be arranged in advance of your session.
How long does the training take?+
CPR (HLTAID009) takes 1.5 hours. First Aid (HLTAID011) takes 3 hours. Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) takes 3.5 hours. These times are for the in-person session only — you will also need to complete a short online pre-learning module before attending.
Do I need to do anything before the in-person session?+
Yes. After booking, you will receive access to an online pre-learning module. You must complete this module before attending your scheduled in-person session.
What is a USI and do I need one?+
A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is a national reference number required to receive any nationally recognised qualification in Australia. You can create one for free at usi.gov.au. You will need to provide your USI when booking.
Where is the training held?+
Our Canberra training sessions are held at Ground Floor, 30 Colbee Court (West), Phillip ACT 2606. The venue is near Woden Plaza with parking available.
What times are classes available?+
CPR and First Aid courses run Monday to Friday — morning sessions begin at 8:30am and afternoon sessions begin at 12:30pm. Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) runs on Saturdays only, beginning at 8:30am. Check individual course pages for exact finish times.
How much do courses cost?+
CPR (HLTAID009) is currently $45 (was $90). First Aid (HLTAID011) is $95 (was $160). Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) is $115 (was $185). Prices are subject to change — book early to lock in current pricing.
Can I reschedule or get a refund?+
No refunds are provided for non-attendance or cancellations. However, you can reschedule your booking with at least 48 hours notice at no extra charge.
How soon can I book?+
You can book online 24/7 using the booking widget on each course page. Classes fill up quickly, so we recommend booking early to secure your preferred session. A credit card is required at the time of booking.
How long is the certificate valid?+
CPR certificates (HLTAID009) are recommended to be renewed annually. First Aid certificates (HLTAID011 and HLTAID012) are valid for 3 years before renewal is recommended.
Can my employer book group training?+
Yes. CBD College offers corporate and group booking options. Contact us on 1300 628 299 or via the contact page to discuss on-site training for your organisation.
Is there an age requirement?+
There is no minimum age requirement. Children under 14 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and the accompanying adult must also pay the full course fee. The course content is designed for adults.
Do I need to kneel to perform CPR during the assessment?+
Yes. The practical assessment requires a continuous 2-minute demonstration of CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. For HLTAID012, child manikins are also assessed on the floor. Infant manikins must be placed on a firm surface. Please wear clothing that allows you to comfortably get on the floor.
What if I'm physically unable to kneel or get on the floor?+
If you cannot perform CPR on a floor-based manikin, we are unable to issue a Statement of Attainment with unit codes and names. We can issue a Statement of Attendance instead. This is a government assessment standard and cannot be waived. If you have concerns, please call us on 1300 628 299 before booking.
What happens if I arrive late to class?+
Classes start promptly. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late you will not be admitted and will need to rebook for a different session. We recommend arriving at least 5–10 minutes before your scheduled start time.
