What to Expect on Your First Aid Training Day

Booked a first aid course and not sure what to expect? Here's exactly what happens on the day — from arrival to receiving your certificate — so you can arrive prepared and confident.

It's completely normal to feel a little uncertain before your first first aid course. Will it be hard? What do you actually have to do? Will there be an exam? Here's a straightforward rundown of what to expect at our Canberra training sessions.

Before You Arrive

After booking, you'll receive a confirmation with a link to the online pre-learning module. You must complete this before attending your session — it covers the theory component of the course and typically takes 30–60 minutes to work through at your own pace, on any device.

You'll also need your USI (Unique Student Identifier)— a free national reference number required for any nationally recognised certificate in Australia. If you don't have one, you can create one at usi.gov.au in about five minutes.

What to Bring

  • ·Your USI number
  • ·Photo ID
  • ·Comfortable clothing you can move in — you'll be kneeling on the floor for CPR practice
  • ·Water bottle
  • ·That's it — everything else is provided

On the Day

Our venue is at Ground Floor, 30 Colbee Court (West), Phillip ACT 2606 — near Woden Plaza. Classes start promptly, so aim to arrive 5–10 minutes early. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late you will not be admitted and will need to rebook.

Arrival & check-in

You'll check in, confirm your USI, and be shown to the training room. Class sizes are small, which means you get individual attention from your trainer.

Theory review

Your trainer will briefly review the key content from the online pre-learning — emergency response priorities, recognising emergencies, and the DRSABCD framework.

Practical stations

The majority of your time is hands-on. You'll practise CPR on adult, child and infant manikins, use an AED trainer, apply bandages, manage simulated emergency scenarios, and more.

Assessment

There's no written exam on the day. Assessment is practical — your trainer observes you performing the key skills. It's a demonstration, not a test to be stressed about. If you need to repeat something, you'll be given the chance.

Certificate issued

Once you've demonstrated competency, your Statement of Attainment is issued on the same day. You can usually expect this within minutes of completing the practical component.

Common Questions

Do I need to be fit?

You need to be able to kneel on the floor and perform 2 minutes of continuous CPR compressions. If you have a physical condition that prevents this, call us before booking — we may be able to advise, though a full Statement of Attainment does require the practical assessment.

Is it scary?

Not at all. Our trainers are experienced, relaxed, and keep things practical. Most students tell us the course was much more enjoyable than they expected.

How long will I be there?

CPR (HLTAID009) takes 1.5 hours. First Aid (HLTAID011) takes 3 hours. Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) takes 3.5 hours. These are for the in-person session only.

Ready to Book?
