Online vs In-Person First Aid Training: What You Need to Know

Can you do first aid training fully online? Not quite — a practical assessment is always required. Here's the difference between fully online, Zoom-based, and in-person training, and which option is right for you.

With so many courses now available online, it's a reasonable question: can I just do my first aid certificate from home? The answer is: partially. Here's what's actually required, what options exist, and how to choose.

Why First Aid Can't Be 100% Online

A nationally recognised first aid certificate (HLTAID009, HLTAID011 or HLTAID012) requires a practical competency assessment. You need to physically demonstrate CPR technique — correct hand placement, compression depth, compression rate, and rescue breathing — on a manikin, with a qualified assessor observing you.

This practical component cannot be replaced by a video or multiple-choice quiz. Any provider offering a fully self-paced online first aid certificate with no trainer interaction or practical component is not delivering a nationally recognised qualification under the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Your Three Options

Fully online self-paced (⚠ Not nationally recognised)

  • ·No practical assessment, no trainer interaction
  • ·Does not result in a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment
  • ·Not accepted by most employers, licencing bodies, or regulators
  • ·Suitable only for general awareness — not workplace compliance

Zoom live class with physical kit (✓ Nationally recognised)

  • ·Live class via Zoom with a qualified trainer and assessor
  • ·Physical resource kit posted to you (includes CPR manikin, bandages, EpiPen trainer, and more)
  • ·Trainer assesses your practical skills via video during the session
  • ·Results in a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment
  • ·Available for HLTAID011 (includes CPR) — $199 through CBD College
  • ·Ideal if you're not in Canberra or prefer remote learning

In-person at our Canberra venue (✓ Nationally recognised)

  • ·Hands-on practical training with a qualified trainer in the room
  • ·Best skill retention — physical feedback on CPR technique
  • ·Smaller class sizes for individual attention
  • ·CPR $45 · First Aid $95 · Childcare First Aid $115
  • ·Certificate issued same day at our Phillip venue
  • ·Morning and afternoon sessions Monday to Friday
